SLIM은 2024년 1월 달 착륙 당시 ‘LEV-1’와 ‘LEV-2’ 두 대의 소형 탐사 로봇을 함께 배치했다. 그 중 LEV-2는 달 표면에 도착한 뒤 몸체를 두 부분으로 펼쳐 양쪽에 바퀴를 형성한 후 이동을 시작했다. 폭 80㎜, 무게 250g에 불과한 이 로봇은 약 2시간 동안 달 표면을 탐사하며 사진을 촬영하고 데이터를 전송하는 임무를 수행했다.

특히 LEV-2는 착륙 과정에서 자세가 뒤집혀버린 SLIM 탐사선의 모습을 촬영해 지구로 전송해 지구에 있던 연구진이 탐사선의 상태를 진단할 수 있었다.

연구진은 “손바닥 크기의 로버가 SLIM 주변을 자율적으로 탐사하며 착륙선과 주변 환경의 이미지를 촬영하고, 이를 달 표면 무선 통신망을 통해 전송하는 데 성공했다”고 설명했다.

장난감 기술에서 탄생한 달 탐사 로봇

LEV-2 개발에는 JAXA를 비롯해 일본 도시샤대학, 소니, 완구업체 타카라토미가 참여했다. 특히 타카라토미는 1980년대 ‘트랜스포머’ 완구를 개발한 기업으로, 로봇의 변형 메커니즘 설계에 자사의 기술을 접목했다.

그 결과 탄생한 LEV-2는 공 모양에서 바퀴형 이동체로 변신할 수 있으며, 바퀴 중심에서 벗어난 회전 구조를 활용해 달 표면을 이동하도록 설계됐다. 또한 다양한 센서와 영상 처리 소프트웨어를 탑재해 주변 환경을 스스로 인식할 수 있으며, 시스템 이상을 감지하고 복구하는 자율 기능도 갖췄다.
